i agree with Lara and Rene C. that the two books were really similar in that both authors used lots of details to teach yoiu about the characters and to try and keep you interested. the two books made you feel like you really knew the characters on a personal level and were there with them at times. Updike's jumping around did seem to be a little disjointed at times but i am a Tom Clancy and he uses this technique in his books. It is almost like you are reading two or three seperate books but they both bring it all together in the end leaving you more satisfied.
