Rabbit, Run Post #2

At the beginning of my edition of the book Rabbit, Run there is the quote-
"The motions of Grace, the hardness of the heart; external circumstances."
-Pascal, Pensée 507
I think this quote captures what Updike wanted us the get out of the book very accurately. Rabbit's nature and actions are based on everything that has happened in his life. Hisconfusionn with love changes as the people he loves change themselves. He runs from everything bad in his life because it is the only thing he finds right and comforting in his life.
Updike, I think wanted you to get the idea that your life is pretty much in the hands of everyone around you, your heart only follows external concepts. I think he clearly gets across this message by finding everything in Rabbits life acceptable to Rabbit himself.
