I agree with Jessica Reynolds that Updike never really got close to his characters like Capote did in In Cold Blood. However I feel that that may be the case because Capote really did get close to Dick and Perry in prison. He phsyically went to see them. Updike created Rabbit to tell a story. I also understand what Jessica said when she said that she is saddened by Rabbit's life but doesn't mourn for his loses the same way she did four Perry's death. Capote did a wonderful job in taking a murderer and making his reader actually care about him. I don't think Updike really wanted anyone to deeply care about Rabbit. I think Updike wanted him to be slightly villified to prove a point; the same way Capote wanted Perry to be understood.
