Rabbit, Run vs. In Cold Blood
I thought Rabbit, Run was rather depressing. Rabbit, Run and In Cold Blood just made me very aware of the bad things that happen in this world. The way meaning was created in Rabbit, Run is different from how it is created in In Cold Blood. The way Updike describes his characters is a lot less personal than the way Capote describes his characters. In Capote’s novel you get to see many sides to the story and the extensive detail helps readers relate. Also, In Cold Blood tends to read less like a story and more like a report sometimes; which can actually make it harder to relate to those aspects. Capote uses more facts and Updike uses the feelings of really only the main character to create meaning. Also, I think that a lot of meaning in both books is derived from how the reader perceives and responds to the content and characters.
