Response to Lara-My interpretation at the end of the book was that Rabbit ran from both Janice and Ruth and ALL responsibility and in all likelihood will repeat the same mistakes that he made with Ruth...He may continue to look for a "perfect" life, jumping from one relationship to another, until he finally (and maybe never) realizes there is no such thing.
I agree with everyone that there was a lot of detail in both books. But where I became bored with Updike's (there seemed no relative reason for some of it) extensive detail, I did not with Capote's. Also, In Cold Blood never read like a report to me. I was captivated from the moment I picked it up-even though it was my second reading of the book. Of course, true-life murders are one of my favorites.
