Thanks to Jessica for her response. I guess I didn't make myself very clear when I asked about Johnny's conflicts. I think it was pretty obvious that he was jealous of George, that we was afraid of the idea of being a father, and that he had a lot of self-doubt. But, beyond that, there seemed to be specific reasons that caused him to act the way he did. The way he and George acted when they were together suggested that something specific had happened and it was just sitting between them like a wall that could not be crossed. Though the parents may have made comparisons between the two and the mother seemed to be critical of everything and everyone, there were on apparent signs that they had treated or raised Johnny any differently. Granted, apparently he had been in the shadow of George all his life, but would that constitute the amount of self-doubt and anger that he had?
Anyway, I think that Lara may have the best take on Junebug in that the movie is full of contradictions and the viewer gets caught up in the same emotions as the family. Because they don't understand her, they exchange one emotion for another, such as the mother's dislike because she may be afraid or jealous of her intelligence. And George is one contradiction after another. First getting upset because Madeline doesn't go to the hospital, then making such a big deal over staying at the hospital with Ashley, then leaving before the funeral, and while driving away making the comment about how glad he is to be gone.
The story was good, but there were too many scenes where people just stood looking at each other and the viewer was left to think "What is going on?"
